ABSTRACT
This study is on Assessment of Roof Failure and Maintenance Practices in Ikot Ekpene. This is with the aim of assessing roofing construction and maintenance issues on buildings in Ikot Ekpene. To achieve this, the following objectives were identified, to assess the causes of roof failures commonly experienced in Ikot Ekpene, to eradicate the effects of the failures on the building and to assess maintenance practices in roofs in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State. The study will mainly educate the general public and the government of the day on the causes, effect and solutions to the cases of roofing construction, and maintenance issues on buildings. The population of study which comes from different field of specialist such as the quantity surveyor, the builders, the architects, the structural engineers was 30 people examined from different firms and sites. Information obtained with the questionnaire includes causes of roof failure, effects of roof failure and maintenance practices of roof in Ikot Ekpene. Obtained data were summarized using frequency distribution tables, and mean score. It concluded among others that evaluating roof top perimeter, inspecting the sealant, preventing leaks before the start, performing additional investigations, checking for strength and stability and investigating to ensure weather resistance are the Maintenance practices on roof in Ikot Ekpene. The study therefore recommended that Government should quickly promulgate a national building regulation for the elimination or considerable reduction of the incessant roof failure in Nigeria and quick response committee for investigating incidents of building roof failure should be formed.

INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
A roof is the top covering of a building, including all materials and constructions necessary to support it on the walls of the building or on uprights, providing protection against rain, snow, sunlight, extremes of temperature, and wind. A roof is part of the building envelope. The roof is perhaps the part of the building structure that has the potential to cause the greatest number of problems.
