1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Lasienthera africana (P. Beav.) is widely distributed in the tropical rain forest (Hutchinson and Dalziel, 2005). There are four ethno varieties identified through their taste, leaf color and ecological distribution. The leaves are consumed as vegetable in Southern Nigeria (Itah, 2004).
Lasienthera africana is commonly used as antacid, analgesic, antispasmodic, laxative, antipyretic, antiulcerogenic and antimalarial (Okokon, et al., 2007). According to Lasienthera africana is bacteriostatic (Itah, 2004), fungicidal (Itahe, 2006), antidiabetic (Ekanem,2006), antiplasmodial (Okokon, et al., 2007), antimicrobial (Andy, et al., 2008) and antiulcer (Okokon, et al., 2009).
