Abstract
Material corrosion is a big risk and a costly phenomenon in the offshore sector of the oil and gas industry with severe negative consequences such as loss of asset, loss of production due to plant shutdown, loss of human life, and health, safety, and environment (HSE) problems including environmental pollution. Offshore environment includes chloride-containing marine atmosphere that can cause severe corrosion on all topside facilities including piping, valves, and valve parts. This chapter discusses briefly different parameters that affect material selection with more focus on corrosion. There is a review on existing piping and valve materials such as stainless steel, nickel alloys, titanium, etc.
