Abstract
An outline is given of NET — the Next European Torus — and its operating conditions compared with that of its successor DEMO. This is followed by a description of the main components, namely, the first wall, divertor, tritium breeding blanket, radiation shield and superconducting magnet, and of subsidiary components. The continuing challenge of the materials problems for each component as the designs evolve are summarised. Two specific problems, the effects of disruptions and the development of low activation materials are briefly considered.
