ABSTRACT
This research focused on “The relevance of mass media in computer technology with focus on selected online news media”. It was to ascertain the effect of computer technology on mass media. It was also aimed at finding out the barriers to the utilization of computer technology in the media sector. The study was carried out on selected online medias in Nigeria. Questionnaires were utilized in eliciting information. The social shaping of technology by Mackenzie and Wajecman (1985) formed the theoretical framework. The study findings revealed that the effect of computer technology on mass media has offered opportunities for sources and audiences to participate in news production. High cost and availability of computer hardware and software is a barrier to the optimal use of computer technology in the mass media. The researcher believes that the study will uncover areas where decisions can be made to improve the use of computer technology as a potent tool for broadcasting.
