Abstract:
Improved small-scale irrigation use efficiency is an important tool for diversifying agriculture in Ethiopia, resulting in higher economic yield from irrigated farmlands with a minimum input of water. Ethiopia has significant irrigation potential assessed both from available land and water resources. However, from the existing cultivated area the evidence shows that small percent is irrigated. Therefore, effectively using of the available water resources for small-scale irrigation development is the most important option. This study was carried out to assess the determinants of small scale irrigation utilization among rural household in Bora Woreda, Oromia Regional State. Thus, to understand these factors the qualitative and quantitative data were gathered. The samples of 277 individual respondents were selected for this study by using simple random sampling technique from three kebeles of the Bora Woreda. The descriptive statistics and model specification analysis were used for analyzing quantitative data. In the model specification, the determinants of small-scale irrigation were identified by the use of binary logistic mode. In the binary model a total of eleven explanatory Variables were included in the model. The binary logit model revealed that seven variable significantly determine the utilization of small-scale irrigation. Irrigation farming experience and soil fertility were found negatively and significantly affect the utilization of small-scale irrigation. Whereas Education levels of household, size of cultivated land, total income, access to training from extension agents and access to credit were found positively and significantly affect the utilization of small-scale irrigation
