THE EFFECT OF FRAUD IN FRUSTRATING LEGITIMATE BUSINESS. A RESEARCH PROJECT MATERIAL ON BANKING AND FINANCE
ABSTRACT
Cases of frauds and foreign in banks have not only become incessant but have also been on the increase in recent years. Although frauds and foreign in banks are global phenomena, their growth in Nigeria Deposit insurance Corporations (NDIC) annual report for instance, presents a disturbing picture of rising trends of fraud. In banks from N3602 million in 1992 to N3519 million in 1991.Fraud, in bank is clearly unacceptably something’s drastic aught to be done to gently stem the fide in view of its implications for the banking industry and the adverse effect it will have on the econo .The effect of bank fraud in frustrating legitimate business, and in corrupting the financial and socio political system should not be taken for granted. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine the economic implication of bank fraud in Nigeria. The accidental sampling method was used in the selection of 635 persons out of which 624 representing 98.27% of the sampled persons completely filled and returned the questionnaires administered to them. Data collected were analyzed using the simple percentages method, the first and second hypothesis was tested using the chi-square test and it was found that bank fraud do have significant effect on Nigeria’s economy with f-ratio of 476.163> f-critical of 12.592 at 0.05 level of significance with 6 degree of freedom, thus, the null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative was accepted. The ANOVA test on the second hypothesis confirms that Anti bank fraud policies in Nigeria has not significantly reduce bank fraudin Nigeria with f-ratio of 2.685 < f-critical of 5.987 at 0.05 level of significance with 1 to 6 degree of freedom, thus, the null hypothesis was accepted. The study recommends more effective coordination of all institutions on the fight against bank fraud by the EFCC, and a full, effective and efficient investigation of corruption reports by the ICPC. 1.0 INTRODUCTION
The level of fraud in the present day Nigeria has assumed on epidemic dimension. It has eaten deep into every aspect of our life to the extent a three years old child talk about 419, the name given to the newly discovered fees fraud that is hunting us as nation. Fraud is defined as deceit deliberately practiced in order to gain some advantage dishonestly. For an action to constitute fraud therefore there must be a intended to benefit the perpetrator to the detriment of another person.
