TACKLING POLITICAL APATHY IN NIGERIA FROM THE GRASSROOT

ABSTRACT

The work focused on tackling political apathy in Nigeria from the grassroots using Itu Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State as a case study. The researcher raised four (4) objectives and formulated four (4) research questions. The researcher adopted a survey research design and employed a simple random technique to select a sample size of 400. Data collections were critically analyzed using simple percentages and frequency table. After a careful study, the findings revealed that illiteracy and ignorance, ethnicity and different religion as well as bad governance and over concentration of leadership in selected regions of the country are the major causes of political apathy in Nigeria, and it also reveals that same factors listed above are the ones sustaining this menace in Nigeria. The study recommends amongst other things that since ignorance and illiteracy are the major focuses of this challenges, then the masses should be duely informed and oriented about the political activities around them and the consequences of showing less interest or no interest at all should be clearly spelt out for them. Also that religious leaders in Nigeria should starts preaching peace and unity aimed at unifying and sustaining the country.
