ABSTRACT
This research takes a cursory examination on A History of Nigerian Railway Corporation, looking at the historical development and the forces that dictated the establishment of the Nigerian railway corporation. The study states the evolution of the railway system in Nigeria and therefore buttresses that a virile rail transportation system plans a significant role in the sectorial development and overall growth of any economy. Evidence abounds to the fact that there have been significant changes in railway system throughout the world, however, in Nigeria rail system has had a stunted growth over the past two years when compared to railways in the developed world. The study observed that almost five decades after independence, the Nigeria rail system remain static in structures and is highly unresponsive to the emerging socio-economic and political challenges. The study adopt historical method of data collection using both primary and secondary sources. It therefore concludes that the present condition of railway system in Nigeria no longer exerts a strong influence nor plays a competitive role in modern Nigeria.
