In the Chinese Year of the Dog, we are pleased to present to you the first issue of the new journal we have organized: Animal Models and Experimental Medicine (AMEM). Why do we need a new journal in this area? Laboratory animal sciences is an emerging interdisciplinary subject, which integrates theories and methods from many disciplines, including biology, medicine, pharmacy, veterinary, bioengineering, biomedical engineering, etc. In recent years, many outstanding papers based on laboratory animals have been published around the world, highlighting how laboratory animal sciences has, among other things, provided systematic biological materials and pertinent technologies for the development of related disciplines; integration into many frontier disciplines; development of new disciplines such as comparative medicine, experimental animal medicine, and comparative biology; and supported development in fields such as life sciences, medicine, food, environment and aerospace. However, there are very few specialized journals in this field, and their impact is very limited. Therefore, it is urgent to establish a professional English-language journal to meet the need of all researchers in this important field. The China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) is an organization for the science and technology professionals. It plays an important role in China in promoting the development of science and technology. One of its key activities is as a co-participant in the “Project for Enhancing International Impact of China STM Journals” which provides support for high-quality journals that represent Chinese cutting-edge science. The mission of the project is to reach a high level in publication of professional English-language scientific journals, and to enhance China’s academic quality and international impact and significance. The project is the largest and most influential project in China for specially supporting English-language journals. In 2016, the editorial office of CALAS won funding from this Project, enabling it to prepare for the launching of AMEM. AMEM has been planned as an international open access, peerreviewed journal dedicated to disseminating research and contemporary information in the field of laboratory animal sciences. The objective of AMEM is to build an international academic exchange platform for research involving laboratory animals, animal models and related topics, including applied research in experimental medicine and translational medicine, and to increase understanding amongst the international academic community of the development of such studies and the welfare status of laboratory animals, with a special focus within China and other Asian countries. AMEM will be a display platform for the original achievements and applied results of international counterparts in laboratory animal sciences and basic medical sciences, being an important communication channel among the scientists around the world. Topics explored by AMEM include new animal models of human diseases, laboratory animal biology, laboratory animal medicine, laboratory animal welfare, laboratory animal biotechnology as well as basic medical research based on laboratory animals. In addition, the journal also has two special columns: “AFLAS Focus” and “Laboratory Animal Welfare and Ethics”. AMEM, just like its name implies, combines animal models and experimental medicine. The term “experimental medicine” appeared at the end of the 19th century and had been later developed into basic medicine. Animal models are used to study life sciences and various changes in the development and progression of diseases that affect humans, and to evaluate the efficacy of various drugs under pathophysiologic conditions. The animal models are formed through longterm experimental studies and their formation is accompanied by the development of biomedical sciences. Study of animal sciences is a holistic investigation with respect to cellular models, ex vivo tissue and organ models. Laboratory animal sciences has progressed with, and has aided the progression of, the development of increasing numbers of medical discoveries and inventions. The academic scope of the journal thus develops from, and extends beyond, laboratory animal sciences. The journal has cooperated with Wiley, the third largest publishing group in the world. Our international editorial team is composed of well-known scientists from China and abroad, and promises to quickly review submitted manuscripts and to make fair decisions. We welcome and encourage the submission of high-quality, original papers, and look forward to publishing more insightful research articles in the journal.
