ABSTRACT
Analysis of phytochemical content of Corchorus capsularis was carried out using standard analytic method. The result revealed that Alkaloid had the mean concentration of 2.45±0.177mg/100g, Saponin had a mean concentration of 0.865±0.163mg/100g. Flavonoid had a mean concentration of 18.375±0.177 mg.100g, Tannin had a mean concentration of 6.72±0.410 mg/100g and cyanogenic glycosides had a mean concentration of 19.29±0.704mg/100g. This result showed that Corchorus capsularis contain low level of phytochemical and may be use as a source of mineral and could also be a good energy source, Thus, it may be consumed without any hazardous effect.

INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY Plants have been the mainstay of traditional herbal medicine amongst rural dwellers worldwide since antiquity to date. Plants are increasingly gaining acceptance even among the literates in urban settlements, probably due to the increasing inefficacy of many modern drugs used for the control of many infections such as typhoid fever, gonorrhoea, and tuberculosis as well as increase in resistance by several bacteria to various antibiotics and the increasing cost of prescription drugs, for the maintenance of personal health (Levy, 2002; Van-Den-Bogaard et al., 2000; Smolinski et al., 2003). Nowadays, the light is focused on foods rich in nutraceutical and functional properties (Mulungulungu et al., 2015). Nutraceutical combining the words “nutrition and pharmaceutical” is a food or food product that provides health and medicinal benefits including the prevention and disease’s treatment (Pepsi et al., 2012).
