CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
- Background of the Study
This research focuses on Pidgin English usage and meaning placement on Atlantic Fm programme “E concern you” by residents of Uyo, which is located in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.
The use of Pidgin English on this programme is very important, because different people from different linguistic backgrounds pay listening ears to the programme, and the items can be interpreted to enhance mutual understanding. Interaction is achieved through code-mixing and code-switching of the languages to increase and enhance effective communication.

Pidgins are languages lexically derived from other languages, but which are structurally simplified, especially in this morphology. They came into being where people need to communicate but do not have first language in common. Pidgin have no (or few) first language speakers, they are the subject of language learning, they have structural norms, they are used by two or more groups, and they are usually unintelligible for speaker of the language from which the lexicon derives.
Meaning placement is a way of reaching mutual understanding in which the presenter not only disseminating information but sharing meaning through communication, in other words conniving the right messages to enhance mutual understanding on a programme and in the study.
In most studies of pidgin English of the lexicon, especially New Guinea, are often given as example, but these are not unambiguous examples of pidgins, as they may be both first and second languages and have been spoken for many generations. Hence, they share both pidgin and Creole language properties. Pidgin undergoes structural expansion when their use is extended to many generation.
