ABSTRACT
This project work was aimed studying Public Organization and social service delivery in Nigeria: An evaluation of Cross River State Fire Service, Calabar. A brief historical development of fire service was cited down in the background of the study. Amongst the problems of the study were lack of financial autonomy and excessive reliance on the government, financial constraint etc. The general objective of the research is to examine the performance of fire service delivery on the safety of lives and properties in Cross River State. The method of data collection used for this research work was a questionnaire divided into two sections; section A consists of bio data of the respondents while section B consists of phenomena data of fire service activities in Calabar, Cross River State. The following hypothesis was developed to aid the study; there is no significant relationship between the ire service and the safety of lives and properties in Calabar. There is significant relationship between fire service operation and the safety of lives and properties in Calabar. The result of the hypothesis shows that there is a relationship between fire service operation and safety of lives and properties. Based on the findings of the study, the following recommendations were made; government agencies, non- governmental organizations (NGOs) should partner with the fire service of Nigeria, especially that of Calabar command in providing fire-fighting equipment to enhance adequate protection of lives and properties. Workers of the fire-fighting service should be trained and re-trained on regular basis.
