INTRODUCTION
- Background to the study
Education plays an important role in every area of a nations development,be it economically, politically, socially and otherwise.it is the only tool that can help facilitate the eradication of ignorance, disease, poverty, illiteracy and unemployment among the people. This fact accounts for the very close attention many countries pay to education, as well as the enormous resources they allot to it
In Nigeria, the primary goal of the school is to mould students both in character and learning so as to become useful citizens for themselves and the society. The achievement of these educational goals of teaching and learning according to Fakoye(2009) depend to alarge extent on teachers who work in the school to enhance goal attainment. Lu (2002) states that life is meaningful if attached to work,to lay aside work is to enter into a state of devaluation.so when an individual is found without work to do he becomes suspicious within the society he finds himself .Moheeb(2004) says to the early Christians work was seen as Gods punishment for man, with the renaissance and reformation new ideas were developed about the value of work.He further posits that some people decide to work so as to put bread on table, some work as to wield power and influence others, while others work hard so as to make friends become self-reliant.A lazy person in those days was regarded as a disgrace to his family and non-entity in the society. This is the reason hardwork was extolled in the society.Children were trained to be vocationally oriented.Work makes an individual relevant due to the fact that he or she is self-reliant,earns a living, prestige and status attached to it.so there is a need to have all this benefits enjoyed by teachers as they happen to be the foundation layers for the achievement of educational goals.Without good teachers it will be impossible to contend the challenges of our ever changing society, without good teachers and good education we cannot hope to achieve satisfactory national development.
