ABSTRACT
This study investigated secondary school students’ conceptual understanding of electricity in Calabar municipality local government area of Cross River State. The total sample of the study was 200 SSII students offering physics, drawn out from 20 schools in the study area. A total of 20 questions were administered to the 200 students through Electricity Concepts Test (ECT) to collect data and find out the students understanding level and common misconceptions. The questions had four options which only one of the option is correct and spaces were provided for students to explain their answers. The procedure used to analyse the data was through population t-test and independent t-test. The study brought out the following results. (1)there is low conceptual understanding of electricity in Calabar municipality local government area, some of the misconceptions of the students in the area are (a)Concepts of potential difference, current and energy were used interchangeably as if they are all the same. (b)Bulbs in series always gives more brightness (c)Batteries are current sources (d)capacitors in parallel are measured like resistance in parallel. (2)There is significant difference in male and female conceptual understanding of electricity in Calabar, municipality local government area. (3)there is significant difference in the conceptual understanding of electricity between students in urban schools and those in rural schools in Calabar municipality local government area. Based on the findings of this study, some recommendations were given as follows; appropriate teaching methods should be adopted in teaching electricity concepts in Calabar municipality local government area, there should be more practical work done before the students while teaching electricity related concepts.
