ABSTRACT
Change in moisture content of soil also known as expansive soils leads to high shrinkage and swelling which if not appropriately treated may lead to the reduction of design life of civil engineering structures such as highways , railways etc. Because this soil trends to put a challenging task to civil engineers, attempt have been made by so many researchers in trying to proffer the solutions to this defect by experimenting in innovative ways with different materials that could possible improve the soil engineering properties , reduce environmental hazards and as well be very cost effective. Selected solid waste like quarry dust, bagasse ash , eggshell ash and sugarcane ash have been used for this purpose with different techniques like compaction test, atterberg limits and grain size analysis, however the aim of the paper is the structural analysis of the behaviour of expansive soil treated with selected solid waste based binders for foundation purposes.

INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the study
Foundation of a building or road is an essential component for effective transmission of loads from the structure to the sub-soil beneath the earth, the quality of soil has a large impact on the structure and its design. Foundations provide the structure’s stability from the ground.
Expansive soil is an example of weak soil which engineering in geotechnical or foundation engineering for bridge, highway, building, embankment. Expansive soils undergo volume changes when they come in contact with water i.e it shows alternative swelling and shrinking properties. It expands during rainy season and shrinks during summer season. The deigns and the construction of the foundation is done based on the soil and area it is recommended to have a deeper foundation so that it can guard any form of damage or distress. These are mainly caused due to the problem of shrinkage and swelling because of temperature changes. Foundations provide the structures stability from the ground i.e. to take the structure deep into the ground and thus increase its stability, preventing overloading.
