INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
The construction and engineering industry plays a significant role in the nation’s societal, economic and political development. The corona virus disease 2019 (COVID 19) pandemic has devastated the world of work, its impact which varies across sectors has been significant in the construction sector. Due to this pandemic, all construction activities have stopped following the Movement Control Order (MCO) by the Nigerian government. Work from home may not be practical as the physical activity must be constructed on-site. There would be a high impact on Nigerian’s economic growth if any major construction project got delays.
The corona virus disease (COVID 19) pandemic has resulted in over 45 million confirmed cases and over million deaths globally (WHO,2020). Global and dramatic spread of COVID-19 has travelled much faster than our response plan, and the risks such as this pandemic has been underestimated by project managers, governments, industries, and all others UNISDR (2015) decline in economic activity resulting from the pandemic. Increased health risks associated with COVID-19 have exacerbated decent work deficits in the sector. On the upside, however, construction has great potential to stimulate recovery, thanks to it’s ability to create jobs. In turn, recovery measures can support the sector’s transformation to sustainability and digitalization.
The COVID-19 has already brought unprecedented economic and social impacts to many parts of the world and several sectors including, but not limited to, business, schools, universities, travel, tourism, hospitality, aviation, agriculture, petroleum and oil, manufacturing industry and construction industries (Shen et al., 2020).
