CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
The increasing global economic depression with its associated hardship and stress has demanded an increased need for recreation and relaxation to alleviate acute tension and stress.
Tourism is a business entity that provides places and events to serve people while they are on holidays. On its original thought, tourism was seen as a source of relaxation and sightseeing. However, McIntosh, Richard and Geoldner, Campbell say its ability to bring people together and enhance interaction expands the influence of tourism beyond relaxation and sightseeing to include wealth creation and modification of behaviour and values (105). The fact that tourism enhances social relationship means that it could influence people’s attitude and behaviour, either negatively or positively and these by extension could impact on social change.
