ABSTRACT
Paint manufacturing has grown in recent years in response to the increasing demand for high quality paints. Consequently, large amount of wastes are released into the environment. This study investigated the assessment of the impact of paint waste on the fungal profile of the soil. The paint effluent increased the heavy metals (lead and cadmium) in the soil. These effects were significant (Lead – 2.212 ± 002mg/kg) and cadmium (1.875 ± 0.008mg/kg) compared to the control (Lead – 2.212 ± 002mg/kg) and (cadmium 1.875 ± 0.008mg/kg). The total fungal count of the soil simple was (30). A total of 4 fungal isolate was characterized macroscopically and microscopically and the zone of inhibition was measured for each isolate impacted with the paint waste. (Penicillium sp. – sensitive), (Aspergillus sp – sensitive), (Cladosporium sp. – Resistant) and (Rhizopus sp. – Resistant), Aspergillus sp and Cladosporium sp. were sensitive to paint waste while Cladosporium sp. and Rhizopus sp. were resistant, sine the paint effluent does not favor all the fungal organisms in the soil remediation and adequate treatment of the waste should be carried out as to protect the soil health.

Soil is one of the major natural resources as important as water and air. It sustains the existence of plants, animals and most importantly humans because; they derives their food from it. This natural resources determines the distribution of plant species and provides a home for wide varieties of organisms. It also controls they cycling of water and chemical substance between the atmosphere and the earth, and acts as both a source and reservoir for atmospheric gases such as oxygen and carbon dioxide (Olayinka et al., 2017)/.
